Complete Goat Vaccination Guide — Prevent Sudden Death in Your Herd
Why Vaccination is Non-Negotiable for Goat Farmers
The number one cause of financial loss in goat farming is sudden death from preventable diseases. Every year, thousands of goats die across Sindh because farmers skip or delay vaccinations.
At Rumi Goat Farm in Sakrand, we have maintained a strict vaccination protocol for years, and our mortality rate is near zero. Vaccination is cheap — losing a goat is expensive. There is no excuse to skip it.

Essential Vaccines for Goats in Pakistan
1. PPR (Peste des Petits Ruminants) — "Goat Plague"
PPR is the deadliest disease for goats in Pakistan with a mortality rate of 80-90% in unvaccinated herds.
- Symptoms: High fever, nasal discharge, mouth sores, severe diarrhea, difficulty breathing
- When to vaccinate: First dose at 3 months of age
- Booster: Annual booster vaccination
- Cost: PKR 50-100 per goat — a tiny investment to save a life worth lakhs
2. Enterotoxemia — "Overeating Disease"
Enterotoxemia strikes suddenly and kills within hours. It typically affects well-fed, healthy-looking goats — making it especially devastating.
- Symptoms: Sudden death with no warning, bloating, convulsions
- When to vaccinate: Every 6 months
- Special note: Vaccinate 2-3 weeks before any change in feed or before lush green fodder season
3. Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)
FMD causes painful blisters in the mouth and on hooves, leading to weight loss and reduced milk production.
- Symptoms: Drooling, limping, blisters on mouth/tongue/hooves, refusal to eat
- When to vaccinate: Every 6 months
- Important: Highly contagious — one infected goat can spread it to the entire herd
4. Goat Pox
Goat pox causes skin lesions and can be fatal in young kids.
- Symptoms: Fever, skin nodules/scabs, swollen lymph nodes
- When to vaccinate: Annual vaccination
- Best time: Before the monsoon season when outbreaks are common
5. Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS)
- Symptoms: Sudden high fever, swelling of throat, difficulty breathing
- When to vaccinate: Annual, before monsoon

Complete Vaccination Schedule
Here is the vaccination schedule we follow at Rumi Goat Farm:
| Age / Time | Vaccine | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months | PPR | First dose, then annual |
| 3 months | Enterotoxemia | Every 6 months |
| 4 months | FMD | Every 6 months |
| 4 months | Goat Pox | Annual |
| Before monsoon | HS | Annual |
| Every 3 months | Deworming | Quarterly |
Deworming — Equally Important
Internal parasites silently rob your goats of nutrition, growth, and milk production. Deworm every 3 months with quality products:
- Signs of worm infestation: Weight loss despite good feeding, rough coat, pale gums, diarrhea, pot belly in kids
- Rotate dewormers: Use different dewormer types each cycle to prevent resistance
- Dose correctly: Under-dosing creates resistant worms — always weigh your goats and dose accurately
Tips from Rumi Goat Farm
- Keep records: Maintain a vaccination diary for every goat with dates and next due dates
- Buy vaccines from reliable sources: Store vaccines in a cool chain — a warm vaccine is a dead vaccine
- Isolate new animals: Quarantine newly purchased goats for 2 weeks before introducing to your herd
- Work with a vet: Build a relationship with a qualified veterinary doctor
- Watch our YouTube videos: We have detailed Sindhi-language guides on vaccination on our YouTube channel
