Goat Care in Summer & Monsoon Season — Sindh & Punjab Heat Guide 2026
Summer & Monsoon Goat Care Guide — Sindh & Punjab 2026
Pakistan's extreme summers (45°C+ in Sindh, 42°C+ in Punjab) and heavy monsoon rains kill thousands of goats every year. Heat stress, dehydration, pneumonia, and parasitic infections are the biggest threats during May-September. This guide covers everything you need to protect your herd.
Heat Stress in Goats — Signs & Prevention
Goats are more heat-tolerant than cattle, but they still suffer when temperatures exceed 40°C:
Signs of heat stress:
- Rapid open-mouth breathing (panting)
- Excessive drooling
- Standing in shade, refusing to move or eat
- Reduced milk production (30-50% drop)
- Increased water intake
- Lethargy and weakness
Summer Management Tips (May-July)
- Shade is non-negotiable: Every goat must have access to shade during 10am-5pm. Use tin roofing with 12-foot height, or plant trees (neem, moringa) for natural shade.
- Water, water, water: Provide clean drinking water at all times. A goat needs 4-6 liters daily in summer (double the winter requirement). Add ORS to water during extreme heat waves.
- Adjust feeding times: Feed early morning (5-7am) and evening (6-8pm). Goats won't eat during peak heat.
- Reduce concentrate feed: Digesting grain generates body heat. Increase green fodder ratio in summer.
- Ventilation: Open all sides of the goat shed. Install fans if possible. Spray water on tin roofing to cool it down.
- Avoid transport: Never transport goats during midday heat. Move animals only in early morning or after sunset.
- Shear long-haired breeds: Trim excess hair on long-haired breeds for comfort.
Monsoon Season Challenges (July-September)
The monsoon brings relief from heat but introduces new threats:
1. Pneumonia
Sudden temperature drops during rain cause respiratory infections. Symptoms: cough, nasal discharge, fever, loss of appetite. Prevention: Keep goats dry. Ensure shed has proper roofing with no leaks. Vaccinate against pasteurellosis before monsoon.
2. Foot Rot
Wet, muddy conditions cause bacterial foot infections. Symptoms: limping, swollen hooves, foul smell. Prevention: Keep pen floors dry and elevated. Trim hooves before monsoon. Use footbath (10% copper sulfate solution) weekly.
3. Internal Parasites (Worms)
Monsoon moisture causes parasite eggs to hatch rapidly on pasture. Symptoms: weight loss, rough coat, diarrhea, bottle jaw. Prevention: Deworm entire herd at the start and end of monsoon season. Avoid grazing on waterlogged pastures.
4. Enterotoxemia (Overeating Disease)
Lush green growth after rains causes goats to overeat, triggering this often-fatal disease. Prevention: Vaccinate before monsoon. Limit grazing time on fresh green pasture. Introduce gradually.
Emergency Kit for Goat Farmers
